Get set up

About a minute per workspace. Roster only reads Slack, and only the channels you share with it.

  1. 1.Create a client

In the dashboard, add a client for each company whose Slack you work in. Its short slug (like acme) is how you'll name it when you ask Claude.

  2. 2.Click Add to Slack

On the client's page, click Add to Slack, pick the client's workspace and approve. You're back in Roster with the workspace connected. Nothing to copy or paste. Repeat for each workspace the client has.

If Slack shows Send request to admin, your workspace needs an admin to approve new apps. Send the request with a short note and share our page for Slack admins. Once it's approved, click Add to Slack again.

  3. 3.Choose what Roster can read

Share all channels you can see, or pick specific ones. You can change this any time from the workspace's channel settings. Direct messages are never shared.

  4. 4.Add the connector to your AI app (once)

Copy the connector URL from the dashboard. In Claude, go to Settings → Connectors → Add custom connector, paste the URL, then sign in to Roster and allow access. ChatGPT and Cursor work the same way. One URL covers all your clients and workspaces, and you can disconnect any AI app from the dashboard.

Then ask things like “search acme for the launch date” or “what's new in #campaign for acme”. Always name the client.

Advanced: use your own Slack app

Slack limits apps outside its Marketplace to reading 15 messages a minute per channel. Search isn't affected. If you need full-speed channel reads, create an app inside the workspace from our manifest and connect it with its token instead of Add to Slack.

  1. 1.Create the Slack app from our manifest

Open api.slack.com/apps, choose Create New App → From a manifest, and pick the client's workspace. Paste this manifest and create the app.

    slack-manifest.yaml
    display_information:
      name: Roster
description: Read-only access for Claude through Roster
    oauth_config:
      scopes:
        user:
          - search:read
          - channels:history
          - channels:read
          - groups:history
          - groups:read
          - users:read
    settings:
      org_deploy_enabled: false
      socket_mode_enabled: false
      token_rotation_enabled: false

Leave distribution turned off. The app only ever lives in this one workspace.

  2. 2.Install it to the workspace

In the app settings, open Install App and click Install to Workspace. If your workspace requires admin approval, an admin will need to approve the request first.

  3. 3.Copy the User OAuth Token

On the same page, copy the User OAuth Token. It starts with xoxp-. Don't use the bot token.

  4. 4.Paste it on the client page

In the dashboard, open the client, give the workspace a short alias (like acme-main), paste the token and connect. Roster checks it with Slack and stores it encrypted.

What the app can do

The token is read-only. It acts as you, so it only sees channels you can see.

To cut access at any time, disconnect the workspace in the dashboard, or remove the app in Slack. See the privacy page for what we store.
